# What Is Canvassing

By [RepCard](/about), built by field sales reps

Canvassing is the practice of going door to door, street to street, or block to block to talk to people in person about a product, service, or political cause. In sales, canvassing means knocking residential or commercial properties to generate leads and close deals. In politics, it means contacting voters to persuade or turn out support. Modern canvassing runs on mobile apps that track every door, log every conversation, and route the day.

## Where the word canvassing comes from

Canvas, the rough fabric, was historically associated with sifting or sieving. By the 16th century, to canvas meant to examine thoroughly. By the 19th century, the word had shifted to its modern meaning: systematically visiting people in person to ask for their business or their vote. The mechanics have not changed in 200 years. Knock the door, start the conversation, log the result, move to the next house.

## The three main types of canvassing

**Sales [canvassing](/features/canvassing).** Field reps in [roofing](/solutions/roofing), [solar](/solutions/solar), [pest control](/solutions/pest-control), [home security](/solutions/home-security), [fiber](/solutions/fiber), [lawn care](/solutions/lawn-care), and [HVAC](/solutions/hvac) knock residential neighborhoods to set appointments or close deals on the spot. **[Political](/solutions/political) [canvassing](/features/canvassing).** Volunteers and paid staff for campaigns and ballot initiatives walk precincts to persuade voters or remind supporters to turn out. **Nonprofit and community [canvassing](/features/canvassing).** Organizations canvass for donations, signatures, public health outreach, or census data. All three share the same operating model: a defined territory, a script, a tracking system, and a manager reviewing the data at the end of the day.

## How modern canvassing actually works

A modern [canvassing](/features/canvassing) operation looks nothing like the clipboard era. **Territory design.** A manager draws polygons on a map and assigns reps or volunteers to specific neighborhoods. **Pin-drop logging.** Every knock is logged on the rep's phone with a status: not home, no, callback, set, sold. **Scripts and objection handling.** Reps have the latest pitch and objection answers in the app. **Live dashboards.** Managers see activity and conversion by rep and territory in real time. **Automated follow-up.** Text, email, and reminder sequences fire automatically based on the knock outcome. This is why teams that switched from paper to apps see 30% to 50% lifts in productive selling time.

## What good canvassing looks like in sales

**Opener under 10 seconds.** The first sentence either earns attention or ends the conversation. Top reps refine theirs for weeks. **Honest qualification.** Find out if the homeowner has the problem before pitching the product. **Same-week follow-up.** Most door-to-door sales close on the third to seventh touch. Day-of follow-up is the difference between sets and closes. **Consistent territory coverage.** Hit the same blocks on a 14- to 30-day rotation. One-pass [canvassing](/features/canvassing) leaves money on the street. **End-of-day dashboard review.** Reps who read their own numbers improve 10x faster than reps who do not.

## Common canvassing mistakes

Sending reps without a pitch script. Improvisation works for veterans, breaks rookies. No map discipline. Reps re-knock houses and miss whole blocks without a polygon system. No follow-up. The first knock is the start of the conversation, not the end. Measuring activity only. Knocks per hour without conversion data hides quality problems. Ignoring weather and timing. Tuesday to Thursday, 4 to 8 p.m., is the highest-conversion window in most residential markets.

## RepCard's Take

> "Canvassing is still the highest-conviction sales motion in home services. The companies winning the category are not the ones knocking the most doors. They are the ones running the same canvassing process every day on the same platform, with the same dashboards, the same follow-up, and the same training. RepCard is that platform."
