Sales Certification Programs
By RepCard, built by field sales reps
Sales certification programs are the structured assessments that prove a rep can actually execute the product knowledge, pitch, and process you trained them on. Certification gates tie training to real competence. Without them, training becomes a feel-good exercise. With them, every rep who sells is one you trust.
What Sales Certification Programs Actually Do
Three core jobs:
1. Gate competence. A rep cannot run solo until they pass certification.
2. Raise the floor. Every rep in the field has demonstrated minimum skill.
3. Create accountability. Managers know who certified on what and when.
The best certification programs are ongoing, not one-time. Reps recertify on new products, new pitches, and new objection handling as the market changes.
What a Certification Program Looks Like
Product certification. Written quiz + verbal explanation. Verified by manager.
Pitch certification. Full pitch delivered to manager or to a simulated customer. Scored against a rubric.
Objection certification. Live role-play against top 10 objections. Scored on accuracy and recovery.
Legal and compliance certification. Required for home services in most states (cooling-off rules, contract language, financing disclosures).
Tool certification. Rep can use the CRM, the digital business card, the canvassing app. Usually demonstrated through a workflow completion test.
Certification Gates That Matter
Day 7: Product + legal certification before shadow days begin.
Day 14: Pitch certification before solo knocks.
Day 21: Objection certification before full solo territory access.
Day 30: Full tool certification.
Missing a gate slows the rep's ramp but prevents them from damaging the team's reputation at the door.
What Bad Certification Looks Like
Multiple-choice quizzes nobody fails. No role-play. Passing rates above 95% (real certification fails 20% to 30% of attempts the first time).
Certification without consequences. If a rep fails and still goes to the door solo, the program is theater.
Certification once, then never again. Skills decay. Annual recertification is the minimum.
RepCard's Take
"RepCard is the Sales Operating System with certification gates built in. Reps submit pitch videos inside the app. Managers score against rubrics. Certification status is visible on the rep's profile. Reps cannot access solo territory features until they pass. All tied together inside one platform."
